CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

You will by now have seen FCO telegram no 224 conveying the reply to the petition addressed to HM The Queen about the Burrows and Tacklyn cases.

At the time we first received the petition an application had been lodged on behalf of Tacklyn for special leave to appeal to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and consideration of the petition was deferred pending the outcome of that application. you know, leave to appeal was refused on 6 October.

The Secretary of State has given most careful consideration to all matters raised in the petition, but he has been unable to advise Her Majesty to intervene.

4.

The question of the abolition of the death penalty in Bermuda is, of course, a matter for the territory's legislature.
