When I wrote to you on 30 May about the death sentences passed in llong Kong on two British soldiers, Gunner Puttock and Trooper Bassett, I promised to lot you know when the Governor had reached a decision on their petitions for clemency. You will want to know that on 5 July the Governor, on the advice of his Executive Council, ordered that the sentences of death on the two soldiers should be commuted to life imprisonment.
