There is a Possibility that the British Government might convince Sir Murry MacLehose to extend his
Term of Service as Governor of Hong Kong
A source of information from London reported that, in view of the current political climate the British Government might convince Sir Murry MacLehose to stay on in Hong Kong as Governor. According to this source of information the British Government's reason to have Sir Murry MacLehose to continue to be the Governor in Hong Kong was based on realistic circumstances During the Governor's term of office he had succeeded in maintaining a good relationship with China. With his experience in foreign affairs Sir Murry MacLehose would be an inevitable choice as Governor of Hong Kong for a further tour.
Sir Murray MacLehose's age would reach the retiring age of 60 by October next. Based on the policy of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, he would have to retire. However, according to the current political and administrative needs, F.C.O. might exceptionally extend Sir Murry MacLehose's service. This was especially the case when he had the necessary expertise to maintain good relation with mainland China.
Earlier, there was news that the British Ambassador to Japan would be the next Governor in Hong Kong. This possibility was not, however, considered to be great; the reason being that U.K. Ambassador to Japan had only been there for 5 months and it was unusual for an Ambassador to be transferred to another territory before he had completed his 3 years' service there.
In any case, the next Governor of Hong Kong would be someone who had expert knowledge of the Peoples Republic's administration.
