China Not Opposed to "Merciless Exploitation" of Hong Kong Chinese Tass in Russian for abroad 1942 gmt (and in English 2040 gmt) 4 Feb 76 Text of dispatch from Singapore:
China shows no intention of changing the status of Hong Kong, although Britain's lease of the city will soon expire. This was indicated in a study made by the Hong Kong University, which was reported in the 'South China Morning Post'.
The Peking leaders, who talk about their incorruptible "revolutionaries", actually do not oppose the continued merciless exploitation of their fellow-countrymen. The paper said that the people of Hong Kong were the poorest in Asia. Not only does Peking obstruct the emergence of a movement for independence, but it works hard to ensure conditions for deriving big profits from Hong Kong, thereby going against the interests of the local population.
The paper said that China's renunciation of its so-called firm principles was explained by the fact that its economic and political interests are concerned with Hong Kong. Hong Kong provides Peking with 40 per cent of its hard currency revenue and serves as a window through which the rest of the world can be reached.
Whenever money is involved, the Chinese leaders abandon their "principles" and align themselves with world capital in the exploitation of the working people. It seems to be still in Peking's interests to keep Hong Kong one of the most disfranchized areas in Asia.
