We have, of course, reported separately on the 'Ava' connexion. What is interesting here is that no less than three MFA officers all told my Ambassador much the same story that the incident was discussed at length with Mr Phan Hien (though whether with or without a Burmese proposal that the rofugees should be shipped back to Vietnam is not at all clear) who was firm that Vietnam did not want them back at all. the most senior of these officers told the U.S. Ambassador that the matter had not even been raised, less still discussed. So we are left wondering whether and when the Burmese ever tell the truth.
