THE 'AVA' CASE
1. Thank you very much for your letter of 25 August (and also for your other letter of welcome). I only came in at the very end of the 'Ava' case and was not directly concerned with the to-ings and fro-ings. I am, however, very glad that it has turned out so well and, particularly, that this has proved such a useful precedent for the future. That the UNHCR now takes responsibility for the refugees, and that the High Commissioner's staff are grateful for all you did, is a very good result. is also good that the Vietnamese, in whose activities of course I am still very interested, have not reacted in any way.

2. I am very much looking forward to my visit to Hong Kong next month, to seeing you again and to plan with you, the Governor and Denys how best to avoid as many misunderstandings between us as possible.
