2. There is additionally a steady flow of illegal immigrants into the UK direct from China and from China via Macao. Since November 1974 the British and Hong Kong security forces have returned those would-be immigrants who have been caught in the act of escaping. Comparative figures of successful and unsuccessful escapers are hard to come by; since the policy of repatriation was introduced, some 8,500 have claimed, to the Hong Kong immigration authorities, to have successfully evaded immigration controls. But the real number of successful escapers is certainly far larger.
