If the Burmese authorities were prepared to accord temporary residence status the British Government have reason to believe that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees would be prepared to arrange for their permanent resettlement elsewhere and to undertake responsibility for the costs of their care and maintenance.

The 'Ava' was allowed to dock in Hong Kong on 13 July in order to take on fresh supplies and 3 of the Vietnamese requiring hospital treatment, including the new-born child, were taken ashore. The ship has now taken up station again off Hong Kong and the Hong Kong authorities will be ready to provide any necessary assistance for the passengers while the Burmese authorities decide what should be done about them.
