CHILD LABOUR IN THE UK AND HONG KONG
1. Mr Male has drawn my attention to a report with a Moscow by-line in "The Times" for 2 June about child labour in the UK. I attach the cutting.
2. On the basis of this report Mr Male wonders whether the UK may not in practice be as permissive, if not more so, than Hong Kong over the question of the employment of young persons. Even if the law is fairly restrictive, it sounds, admittedly on the basis of a possibly prejudiced account, as though practice in the UK is somewhat lax. Mr Male considers that it might be useful to have a look at the UK's and Hong Kong's legislation on child labour with a view to seeing whether there is any significant difference between the two. A broad comparison of the practice in both the UK and Hong Kong would also be useful, though I appreciate that that would be more difficult.
3. Do you think you could look into this matter and let HKIOD have any findings, please? There is no particular urgency.
