THE LAW ON EMPLOYING CHILDREN

Whilst there is no minimum age for employment in Hong Kong, no person under 14 years of age may be employed in industrial undertakings, dangerous trades, licensed premises or ships. No female under 18 years of age may be employed, between 8 am and 6 pm in licensed premises in which liquor is sold. Young persons aged 14 and 15 may work 8 hours a day in industry with a one hour break after 5 hours of

continuous work. No overtime is allowed.

CHANGES IN THE MINIMUM AGE FOR EMPLOYMENT

This is obviously a field that is kept constantly under review and is closely related to the school leaving age: the Hong Kong Government have announced that they are planning to provide schooling for all up to the age of 14 by September 1978.
