VI. Summary of present situation

1.

The authoritative source for the present boundary is the Agreement of 1910, (Bibliography, item 5). The boundary can be shown on D. Survey maps, classed as 'demarcated'.

2.

There is no good modern topographical mapping reflecting precisely the Agreement of 1910.

3.

Series 1501 and 1.G.N's Carte de l'Afrique de l'Ouest must be used with care as sources for the boundary alignment, since both show deviations from the line laid down by the 1910 Agreement. The Chief Surveyor of the Nigerian Federal Survey Department confirmed in August 1970 that there is no agreement to the changes shown on these American and French maps. It should also be noted that the Boundary Study issued by the Geographer of the U.S. State Department, (Bibliography, item 8) makes no mention of these changes.

4.

There is no single best source for the Nigeria-Niger boundary. The following sources are considered the best currently available for the sectors indicated:

(i)

West of 5°30'E.

The annotated Nigerian 1:50,000 maps, held in MRLG under reference E39:3(2), (see note 12(iii)}.

(ii) 5°30′E-9°E.

(iii) 9°E-10°30'E.

(iv) 10°30′E-13°E

(v) 13°E-13°30'E

(vi)

East of 13°30'E

The IGN Carte de l'Afrique de l'Ouest at 1:200,000 scale, (see paragraph V. 2), except for those parts where changes are shown on the annotated series 1501 sheets held in MRLG under reference E39:1(11) (see note 12(i)), where the annotated 1501 sheets should be used.

Annotated series 1501 sheets ND 32-11 and ND 32-15, MRLG reference E39:1(11).

The IGN Carte de l'Afrique de l'Ouest at 1:200,000 scale (for sheet and edition details see paragraph V.2).

No suitable map source at a scale larger than 1:500,000. The boundary should be drawn according to the 1910 Treaty (Bibliography, item 5), i.e. along the thalweg of the Komadugu River to its mouth, and then due eastwards for 26,700 metres.

Series 1501 sheet ND 33-10, ed. 1, modified if necessary so that the east-west sector in Lake Chad lies on the latitude of the mouth of the Komadugu River (to match with (v) above; see also paragraph IV. 2(ix)).
