Your letter dated 3 November 1975.

The boundary disclaimer note which you provided for us in Reference A has produced problems in our relations with the US Defense Mapping Agency.

2. This Directoratend the US DA are engaged in various joint map and air chart production programmes. In effect this means that in particular series we produce some sheets and provide the US with stocks and reproduction material and the US produce other sheets, supplying us with stocks and repmat. 3. The British Liaison Officer (Survey) in Washington has now informed us that the State Department have instructed the US DMA that our new disclaimer for boundaries is unacceptable being unsuitable for US users for a number of

reasons.

2. The note does not say whether it represents a US or a UK government position.

b. As worded the note is a statement on all D Hil Svy maps and does not apply only to the map it appears on.

No note referring without qualification to "UK territories" is acceptable to US users when UK possession of those territories is disputed by the US.

The State Department does not accept any map as authoritative on international boundaries except those maps which form integral parts of boundary agreements.

The US has proposed the following note as a compromise acceptable to both US and UK users:

"The US Government does not regard this map as authoritative on boundaries

or political status. The UK Government does not regard this map as authoritative on boundaries or political status except in relation to UK territories."
