Dear Martin

CONGRESSMAN WOLFF'S VISIT TO CHINA

1. As a postscript to the episode of Congressman Wolff and his remarks about the status of Hong Kong, I enclose a copy of his "report" on his visit to China which was published in the "Long Island Press" and subsequently in the Congressional Record. You (and Peking and Hong Kong) may be interested in the extra- ordinary degree of naivete he displays and in his ability to get things wrong (e.g. "it is evident to me that Mao and his closest advisers, including his present wife, Chiang Ching, Madame Mao, all members of the so-called "Shanghai clique" (...) have again emerged on top".) It is not surprising that he got Hong Kong wrong too.
