RECORD OF MEETING BETWEEN SIR MURRAY MACLEHOSE AND MR J.R. STAINTON, DEPUTY MANAGING DIRECTOR, BRITISH AIRWAYS, AT THE FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE ON THRUSDAY 22 JULY 1976 AT 12 NOON

Mr. JR Stainton
Mr. Stainton said his call was principally to
maintain the personal contact established in Hong
Kong. On bilateral arrangements with USA, he
thought the main argument in negotiating the new
agreement would centre on the Atlantic routes and
on Fifth Freedom Traffic. Discussions were
unlikely to begin before October and agreements
might not be reached before June 1977 when the
bilateral agreement was due for renewal in which
case a temporary extension of the current agreement
would be effected.
2. Negotiations on the Philippines/UK bilateral
agreement might affect Hong Kong since the Philippines
would probably push for a link with Australia via
Hong Kong and CPA would naturally wish for a quid
pro quo

The Governor asked about the Concorde route
to Australia.
Mr. Stainton said that British
Airways were having difficulties with India. It
was desirable to have one stop in the Gulf and
one stop in Singapore which would involve over-flying
India who were making difficulties.
