OPPOSITION TO A FARE INCREASE FOR
FERRIES TO OUTLYING ISLANDS
Last week's papers reported the Government's confirmation that the Hong Kong
and Yaumati Ferry Company had applied for a fare increase at least double the existing fares - for its outlying island routes. The papers said that the proposal would he submitted to the Executive and Legislative Councils for discussion.
The news met with opposition from residents in/Cheung Chau, and the Vice Chairman of the rural committee there told the papers that a fare increase would affect the tourist trade on the island and that the committee would hold a meeting to discuss the matter.
Two papers during the week editorially opposed the proposed fare increase.
This move will not be supported by the public.
The Company can always open up new routes and increase the frequency of trips in order to increase profits, and this will benefit both the public and the Company.
If people cease to ride on ferties because of increased fares, it will be the Ferry Company's loss.
The Company has constanfly raised the fares for its harbour routes as well as outlying island routes, and it has gone too far this time by proposing another large increase.
This constant rise in fares will add to the burden on islanders and workers who have moved to live on outlying islands.
We feel that the Government should not encourage public service companies to increase charges and should not grant a fare rise for ferries serving outlying islands without giving enough consideration to the consequences,
