HONG KONG: GOVERNOR'S STATEMENT TO LEGCO: PRESS REACTIONS

1. I returned from Hong Kong with a copy of the Hong Kong Government Information Services' press review for the week 6-12 October containing a summary of editorial comment in the Chinese language newspapers on the Governor's statement to the Legislative Council. I attach a copy of the review together with a synopsis that has been prepared in the Department.

Lord Goronwy-Roberts has asked the Governor to let him know the reactions to his statement to the Legislative Council, particularly those of the Communist press. Pending the Governor's report, the Minister of State may care to see the

attachments.
