We also believe that nothing would be more

likely to reinforce HMG's defence of their policies in

Hong Kong than an expansion of British exports to the

Colony. The market is there, the devaluation of the

pound has more than off-set freight differentials with

Asian competitors, and the office of the Senior British

Trade Commissioner offers a first-class service. We

should therefore continue to press the Department of

Overseas Trade to do all it can to interest exporters

in the market. For its part the Hong Kong Government

is very conscious of the need to do all it properly can

to edge business our way.
