S DEC1975
OTTAWA
The Department of External Affairs presents its compliments
to the British High Commission and has the honour to refer to the High
Commission's Aide-Mémoire of May 13, 1975 concerning the admission to
Canada of Vietnamese refugees from Hong Kong.
The decision of the Canadian authorities initially to accept
200 independent persons from Hong Kong was subsequently increased to
300. As of October 31, 1975, 325 Vietnamese and Cambodian independents
and 233 sponsored and nominated relatives have been admitted to Canada
from Hong Kong. As of the same date, Canada has accepted a total of
6,414 refugees from Indochina. Because consideration must also be given
to the continuing special Chilean refugee program and to the acceptance
of other individual refugee applications throughout the world, Canadian
authorities regret that they are unable to increase further the allotment
of refugees from Hong Kong.
The Department of External Affairs avails itself of this
opportunity to renew to the British High Commission the assurances of
its highest consideration.
