Thank you for your minute of 13th May about refugees from Vietnam, and

in particular those who have arrived in Hong Kong.

I have also seen your minute of 13th May to Judith Hart.

I note what you say about admission to this country. The position at

present is that we are still waiting for the Hong Kong Government, the U.S.A

and the U.N.H.C.R to let us know how many of the refugees have a connection or

tie with the United Kingdom and wish to come here. When I do have this

information I shall be able to take a fresh look at the position, and at the

appropriateness of the criteria set out in my statement on 8th May. In doing

so I will certainly bear in mind what you say.

I am copying this minute to the Prime Minister and to Sir John Hunt.
