RESETTLEMENT OF REFUGEES FROM VIETNAM AND CAMBODIA

The Home Office have asked us whether we can find out for their Ministers how countries outside the Nine are responding.

I have asked Mr Callway, UK Mission Geneva, to find out from the UNHCR to which countries the High Commissioner has addressed his appeal to assist in resettlement, on what basis were the countries selected, whether all countries with Vietnamese immigrant population were included and what response has been forthcoming to the appeal.

We have sent the Home Office copies of telegrams indicating the initial responses of Australia, Canada and Sweden, Singapore, Philippines etc. but would best to await the response from Geneva before considering what more can be done.

I anticipate few countries will wish to follow Canada's example in offering to take a quota.

I have asked Research Department whether they know of countries where there are Vietnamese overseas communities.
