Tin Tin Yat Po said: "This is the first time the Government has announced its determination to revise legislation and introduce harsh punishment to curb violent crimes."
Nam Wah Man Pão said: "Coupled with other severe punishment, life imprisonment would go a long way towards reduóing violent crimes in Hong Kong."
Ming Pao and Hong Kong Times added that life imprisonment would also separate vicious criminals from the rest of the community for good and prevent them from committing further crimes.
Sing Tao Jih Pao (9.11.75) and Wah Kiu Man Po (8.11.79) maintained that prisoners serving life imprisonment should not be released under any circumstances in order to achieve an effective deterrent against violent črime
Wah Kiu Yat Po (8.11.75) and Kung Sheung Daily News (8.11.75) were disappointed with the Government's decision, saying that life imprisonment was no substitute for hanging as an effective deterrent against violent crime.
The two papers stressed their determination to press on for the enforcement of capital punishment.
Kung Sheung Daily News said: "The people in Hong Kong are trying to maintain the law on hanging' in view of the alarming crime rato. Capital punishment has not been carried out since 1966."
