A. GENERAL INFORMATION
According to his mother, the Prisoner was born in Hong Kong, but because he was delivered at home, he had no birth certificate to prove his age and his date of birth (25.12.1950) was declared on his Hong Kong Identity Card.
The Prisoner came from a big family. He had altogether three brothers and six sisters and he was the fourth child in the family.
His father, a stevedore, had been out of work for four to five years, but engaged in casual assistant work to a widowed clanswoman selling herbs and occasionally earned a small sum ecough for him to buy some cigarettes. His wife was also engaged in casual work. Only the three elder unmarried children were properly engaged in work and they provided the main source of income for the family.
The Prisoner studied until he was seventeen and completed primary six in 1968, according to a school-leaving certificate issued by a Confucian School (which appeared to be on Jordan Road before, but was now said to be demolished). The Prisoner revealed that his results had been poor. He repeated a few times and only got barely promoted after his transfer to the Confucian School at primary three. As a result, he did not pursue further studies, and the financial condition of the home also did not encourage this.
Since leaving school, the Prisoner had his hands on waxing work for a few years and then he changed by helping his elder brother in transportation business; but before this, he revealed that he had helped his father as waitor at a certain unlawful gambling club organized for U.S. servicemen at Hankow Road for a year. His last job was with his elder brother; as lorry-attendant, he earned $30 a week pocket money from him.
