and a paper sheath or scabbard was found tucked into the waistband

of the prisoner's trousers. The prisoner was then taken to hospital

and on examination it was discovered that he was suffering from a stab wound in his left thigh.

After the prisoner had been sent to hospital the police

searched back along the blood trail and found a blood stained knife

on a closed fruit stall situated at the mouth of the service lane

on the corner of Bute Street.

Forensic evidence was given that the blood group of the

prisoner was of Group 0 and the blood group of the deceased was of

Group B. That all the blood found in the restaurant was of Group B

as was also the blood found on the table cloths and bed sheet that

were on the floor of the restaurant. The trail of blood leading

from the service lane to the bottom of the staircase in Reclamation

Street was of Group 0, as was also the blood found in the back of

the lorry in which the prisoner was discovered. Blood found on the

blade and the handle of the knife discovered on the fruit stall was

of Group B. The paper sheath found tucked into the waistband of the

prisoner's trousers exactly fitted the shape of this knife, and was

also stained with blood of Group B. The blood stained table cloths also contained tear holes that could have been caused by this knife,

and as a result of microscopic examination of the knife, fibres were discovered adhering to its blade which fibres exactly matched the

fibres of those table cloths. Also when the prisoner was examined

in hospital he was found to have blood of Group B on both his hands

and on his right foot.

On the 20th December, 1973, the day after the incident, the prisoner made a statement in question and answer form to the police. In the statement he gave further details of the story that he had told the police after his discovery in the back of the lorry, but the gist of his story was the same, that he was the victim of a robbery and wounding. In his statement the prisoner related how he used to drive a pak pai car, and that he had handed the car over to another person at about 5.30 on the morning of the 19th December at a petrol station in Bute Street just opposite the entrance of the service lane. That he walked along Bute Street intending to go to a nearby restaurant, but that just near the fruit
