ASSOCIATES

The Prisoner had relinquished his association with school friends shortly after he gained his way into employment.

The group of companions which he had apparently sticked to was confined to a number of football-fans, whom he began to acquaint with about four years ago. He had also befriended a limited number of people, young and aged, while hawking. But perhaps due to the mobility in hawking, he had not maintained close contact with them. It was noted that some of other Prisoners in the same case were first known to the Prisoner either in the playground or were introduced by these friends.

PERSONS INTERVIEVED FOR INFORMATION RELEVANT TO THE CONDUCT &

CHARACTER OF THE PRISONER

1.

Mr. TSE Tak-chuen (Father of the Prisoner)

The Prisoner had worked under his supervision as a woollen garment apprentice in the years 1963-1967. Their relation- ship gap widened after that. The Prisoner was said to have contri- buted little money, if any, to the family and had preferred to work on his own rather than together with his father. In particular, the Prisoner had been a nuisance to the father because he used to bring home dirty sport-shirts of his fellow football-fans for washing. This resulted in the excuse for the Prisoner to stay away from the family. The Prisoner had put himself up in his friends' house a few months before the commission of the offences. The father claimed to have no knowledge of these friends and other hobbies of the Prisoner.

2. Mrs. TSE TAM Mui-kwai (Mother of the Prisoner)

Mrs. TSE appeared to be very much reserved during the interview and gave an almost uniform answer of "I have not taken notice of this....that....". She said she only knew that the Prisoner had acquainted with some young bad characters and had gone into heavy debts from gambling. She confirmed that the Prisoner did not support the family financially, but after the offence the Prisoner did spend some money for the family.

3. Mr. TSE Tai-yum (Aged 25, younger brother of the Prisoner,

living with parents.)

A Form Five graduate and also a football-fan, Mr. TSE commented that had the Prisoner not been so keen in playing football, his relationship with the father might have been closer and things in better control. He had also played football with the Prisoner and sone of his friends about 4 years ago, but after knowing that some were
