GENERAL INFORMATION

The Prisoner was brought up in a poor family with his late father formerly a labourer with a Hong Kong Government department. He ranks 4th among six siblings. Both parents were illiterate. The family was living at the Hing Wah Resettlement Area before they were offered two low cost housing cubicles at Valley Road Estates in 1964. The Prisoner, after his marriage on 23.2.71, returned to reside at their wooden hut at the Hing Wah Resettlement Area in Chai Wan. The Prisoner had studied in Chai Wan up to primary five standard only. He was not keen in studies and his academic per- formance was below average. He played truant very often and later dropped his schooling although his parents had tried to urge him to continue schooling.-

He took up employment at fourteen. .At first, he served apprenticeship in mechanics and later in metal-work, but he gave up both jobs several months afterwards because of the low income. He then changed to work as a casual labourer at various saw-mills for about three years until 16.5.67 when he became a police constable trainee in Aberdeen. He gave up this career again about three months later because, so he said, of its hard training and low pay. He then worked as an attendant with the Shan Si Printing Company, where he committed the offence of Larceny by Servant. This together with another offence of Robbery gave him an imprisonment for 16 months on 18.4.68. After his release from prison, he again worked at various saw-mills as a casual labourer. For over a year prior to this offence, he was virtually unemployed except on rare occasions he had assisted his younger brother in doing decoration work.

.

He has two sons. Among the other condemned prisoners

in this case, two are his younger brothers.
