PARLIAMENTARY QUESTIONS: MR STANLEY NEWENS MP
1. Mr Stanley Newens MP (Labour Co-op, Harlow) has put down three Questions for written answer on 18 July, asking
the Secretary of State: -

1) If any witnesses in trials of individuals charged
with corruption as the result of investigations.
initiated by the Independent Commission against
Corruption in Hong Kong have been allowed to keep
corrupt earnings and evade tax liabilities on such
earnings in return for giving evidence.
2) If the Royal Hong Kong Police armouries contain
any nausea or vomit-producing gas; and if any facilities exist for issue of such gas to the Royal Hong Kong Police.
3) If there are any contingencies envisaged in which
the Royal Hong Kong Police would be able to use
nausea or vomit-producing gas; and what provisions have been made for such contingencies.
The Governor of Hong Kong believes that Mr Newens' question about corrupt earnings clearly relates to the
position of
see Hong Kong telegram no. 712). The Governor recommends that the Secretary of
State should give a straightforward denial that any such
arrangements have ever been made and that we should not
refer to the
case. I think we must be careful to
avoid laying ourselves open to charges of bad faith and
suggest that we should take up the reference to Mr
