It is realised how much interest these (articles/ allegations) have aroused both here and abroad, and it is
natural that comments should be sought. But
is a
Crown witness in the important trial, now taking place in Hong Kong, of former Chief Superintendent Godber. It would therefore be improper to comment on (the articles/Mr Hunt's allegations).

10. This is a matter which may arise during the trial of Mr Godber. I cannot comment further at this stage.
GODBER'S EXTRADITION FROM THE UK

11. Mr Godber was returned to Hong Kong on 6 January. Hong Kong Government had applied for his extradition, under the Fugitive Offenders Act, to face the bribery and conspiracy charges on which he is now being tried.
(IF PRESSED ON REASON WHY GODBER COULD NOT BE EXTRADITED EARLIER) 12. Proceedings for Mr Godber's extradition were commenced immediately evidence supporting a charge for an extraditable offence was available. Investigations into a possible offence by Mr Godber under Section 10 of the Hong Kong Prevention of Bribery Ordinance were at an advanced stage when he fled from Hong Kong in June 1973. Since there is no corresponding offence under United Kingdom law, he could not be returned to Hong Kong to be tried for an offence under Section 10 and an extraditable
offence had to be established.
