EXTRACT FROM "MIDWEEK" 16.1.74:

-17-

Your defence fund came to about £45,000, it was a great deal of money for one defence, I understand you didn' raise all that money, was

t some of it raised for you?

MANGOLD:

Could we go on to the next question please?

Well the next

question is is that if some of it was raised for you, would it be fair to assume that some of your colleagues in the police force were only too happy to contribute as much as they could to the defence fund?

MANGOLD:

I'd like to go on to another question if you don't mind.

Well the next question is that as you're not denying it totally one can assume that you have been looked after as far as is possible by those who wish to remain in their posts?

I don't have any comment on that statement,

Just say we had...

I had a lot of friends.

MANGOLD:

And you still have a few.

MANGOLD:

Several very good ones. (BACKGROUND)

So the tigers of corruption remain but true to their nature defensively camouflaged within an angry and confused police force. The corruption is an insult both to the good young recruits and the many honest men already in the force. (BACKGROUND) The real test for the Royal Hong Kong Police is now no longer its ability as a crime fighting or riot control organisation. It is a question of its own credibility over the four-and-a-half-pillion people of a Colony Britain must continue to rule.
