CONFIDENTIAL
of the Hong Kong LEP Division has been under consideration.
A final decision on its future must await the outcome of the
negotiations to decide the future force levels.
7.
Meantime, a decision has already been taken to remove all
160 Hong Kong LEPS from UK-based H. Ships by the end of 1976.
This will limit the future involvement of LEPS to tasks in
HMS TAMAR and the Hong Kong squadron.
8. On the basis of the above decision, and in order to achieve
Defence Review manpower savings as early as possible, planning
has started to allow the necessary LEP redundancy to take place
in two phases.
It is intended that individuals selected for
the first phase will be informed in early Nove:ber at the same
time as the force level decisions are announced, and will
consist of some 150 ratings. The second phase, which requires
detailed study of the implications of the new force levels
will not be ready for implementation until early 1976.
(We
shall have to avoid the unfortunate clash with the Chinese New
Year on 31 January 1976). Discharge of all these LEPS made
redundant should be completed by the end of the 1976/77
Financial Year.
9.
All LEPS made redundant will be given:
a. A minimum of six months' notice unless individuals
opt for less and Service considerations allow;
b. Joint Service agreed redundancy benefits, pension,
etc on a similar basis to those given in 1967;
· c.
A minimum of one month ashore in Hong Kong
before discharge on top of terminal and accrued leave;
d. Local assistance with resettlement.
