The 4.5" Mark 8 fully automatic general purpose

gun has entered service in the Type 42 destroyer and the

Type 21 frigate, following successful evaluation trials

in HMS Bristol.

(viii) Action Data Information Systems

All new warships, and some ships as they refit,

are being provided with computer-based action data

information systems, to provide high speed correlation

and analysis of data for tactical purposes.

(ix)

Inertial Navigation System

An improved inertial navigation system, developed

for submarines and the new cruisers, is in production.

Communications

Better long-range satellite communications terminals

are being installed in ships.

British Army of the Rhine (BAOR)

12. The British Army of the Rhine remains a key element of the United Kingdom contribution to NATO. The combat

element of BAOR is First (British) Corps

(1(BR) Corps) of three divisions of two brigades each and a number of

other supporting formations and units. The Corps forms an integral part of

the Allied Northern Army Group and, together with the Corps of our

German, Dutch and Belgian Allies, covers a vital and vulnerable

sector of the Central Region Front. 1 (BR) Corps, a highly

professional formation, is equipped with a modern and sophisticated
