FUTURE OF HMG's COMMITMENT TO HONG KONG:

As my bon Friend the Under Secretary

for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

said on 6 November we have no intention

of abandoning Hong Kong.

expire until 1997. It is not possible

to predict what the circumstances

will be so far in the future.

That is a matter for ny rt hon Friend

the Foreign and Commonwealth

We shall still be able to reinforce

the garrison should the need arise.

10. WHY MAINTAIN TROOPS IN

SOME DEPENDENCIES BUT NOT OFFERS:

We only station forces in our

remaiuing dependencies when this is

considered necessary to support our

responsibilities.
