Before the
commencement of my official programme I was also able to spend an
evening with Dr. Legg
who, together with the other
candidates, had just arrived in Hong Kong. I had another meal
with him before he left.
5. On completion of my visit I was gratefully conscious of the
generosity of the Hong Kong Polytechnic for contributing half
the cost of my passage and the cost of my hotel room during the
period in which I was visiting the Polytechnic for the care
which had been given to the arrangements for my programme :
for the patience and friendliness (not to mention the amount of
time involved) extended to me by everybody I met and for very
generous hospitality of a varied nature. I was particularly
grateful to Mr. Varty who, apart from some generous hospitality,
made the first initiative which led to the invitation.
6. As regards the Hong Kong Government my thanks are due to
Mr. Kingwell who arranged and stage-managed my visit against
what amounted to an unpromising background, but with eminently
satisfactory results: among other things he intervened with the
Polytechnic at a point when due to lack of management and the
incidence of staff leave, nothing would have happened about sending
me an invitation unless he had made a move. Mr. Kingwell was
also particularly kind in a number of personal ways.
7. In addition, I was most appreciative of the help given by
Mr. Kenneth Topley, the new Director of Education.
