Revised Phase II
7
The proposed revised Phase II would produce some extra workshop space, but is primarily intended to provide communal facilities, viz:
(a) Student Union;
(b) Staff and student common rooms;
(c) Recreation rooms;
(d) Canteens for staff and students; and
(e) Gymnasium.
8
The UPGC recommends that the revised Phase II should be consecutive with Phase I and this timing means that a contract for the revised Phase II should be signed in early 1976 with a completion date of about Easter 1978. This would require Government agreement by February 1975 to the Polytechnic entering into preliminary com- mitments with their architects for the preparation of plans for the revised Phase II including working drawings and bills of quantities in readiness for construction to start in early 1976.
9
By mid 1976 the revised Phase II would involve expenditure for the movement of machinery, and renovation and repartitioning of existing buildings. A provisional sum of $4 million (based on a similar exercise at IIKU when the Knowles Buildings was completed) has been earmarked for this.
10
The total cost of the revised Phase II, including consequential expenses, fees, furniture and equipment is $37.4 million at mid 1974 prices.
11
The Secretary, UPGC estimates that the savings on Phase I will amount to $15 million, reducing the commitment accepted by the Finance Committee from $129 million to $114 million. Thus the total commitment for Phases I and II becomes $151,4 million.
Revised Phase III and Ultimate Size of the Polytechnic
12
The UPGC has also outlined a possible revised Phase III, starting in early 1978 as the revised Phase II reaches completion.
