3. Gordon Hunting now confirms his support for the (revised) submission. His further comments are :

(a) Library expansion. He has already advised that

any sum between £50,000 and £250,000 for the purchase of books would probably be justified. Since the proposals now include periodical subscriptions he supports the increase. proposed expenditure on binding equipment (£14,000) seems reasonable particularly as there is a qualified member of staff waiting to use the

equipment.

(b) Printing equipment.

The

He suggests that the Polytechnic should be asked to provide more information about the proposed output of the units. A specialists view on the equipment proposals (costing £27,000) would need to be obtained before orders are placed.

(c) Audio-visual aids. This is now a straightforward

request which he wholly supports.

(d) Metrology equipment. The original expenditure

proposed has been halved to the much more reasonable amount of approximately £110,000. Here too a specialist's view should be obtained before orders are placed; and this in particular could usefully be discussed with Dr Legg.

4. We spoke on the telephone about an informal meeting about this project and the second project involving the Technical Institutes and I suggest a day in the week beginning 3 March when Gordon Hunting will have returned from Iran where he goes today. Perhaps we could agree/time over the telephone. We could also then pursue the suggestion that a meeting with Dr Legg be arranged.
