Since the Polytechnic was inaugurated on 1 August 1972, it has expanded rapidly. Approved programmes assume a student enrolment of 7,000 in 1978, eventually rising to 8,000. Evening students at present number about 13,000 and will rise to 20,000 within 4 years. The Hong Kong Government have accepted in principle capital commitments up to HK$151.4m for new buildings.
