Little Grebe. Podiceps ruficollis. Recorded in small numbers throughout the

year occasion:lly up to 30+. At least five pairs nested 1972.

Spotted-billed Pelican. Pelecanus philippensis. Formerly up to 50 birds regularly

observed during the winter. Smaller numbers in recent years.

Dalmation Pelican. Pelecanus crispus. First recorded in 1971. About 70 in 1972.

Cormorant. Phalacrocorax carbo. Winter visitor with up to 500 recorded.

Von Schrenk's Little Bittern. Ixobrychus curhythmus. Single birds at Mai Po in

April and October 1956.

Yellow Bittern. Ixobrychus sinensis. Most birds recorded during the summer (up

to 50+) but a few winter. Estimated 22 pairs nested in the mangrove in 1960 and an estimated 50 pairs nested in 1973.

Chestnut Bittern. Ixobrychus cinnamoneus. Summer visitor with up to ten recorded,

but usually smaller numbers. Breeding hac occasionally been suspected but never proved.

Black Bittern. Ixobrychus flavicollis. Occasional visitor in small numbers.
