Summary

1.1

This report concerns the area of the Deep Bay Marshes known as the Mai Pc Marshes, covering an area of about 940 acres (381 hectares).

1.2 The area consists primarily of kei wais (shallow shrimp

ponds) and dwarf managrove.

1.3 The area is currently threatened either directly or indirectly

by housing development, graphite mining and coversion of the mangrove to deep fish ponds.

1.4 The site contains a varied avifauna and marine fauna associated

with the well developed mangrove communities and thus has very considerable recreational and eductional potential.

1.5

It is proposed that the area be developed with three zones:-

a.

C.

A Nature Conservation Area (Restricted Access Reserve) in the northern part (515 acres - 209 hectares).

A Nature Education Area (Wildfowl Park) in the centre (130 acres 53 hectares).

-

An area of unrestricted access in the southern part.

1.6 Preliminary plans for this development are outlined.

1.7 It is important that these ares be designed now, even if

development is not implemented immediately, so that the risk of enroachment is minimised.
