DEFENCE AND EXTERNAL AFFAIRS SUB-COMMITTEE: INFORMAL ORAL BRIEFING
1. The Committee Clerk has now confirmed that the oral briefing will be held at 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday 11 November, in Committee Room 7 at the House of Commons.
2. On Hong Kong the briefing will cover the four items listed in the first paragraph of Mr O'Keefe's minute of 10 October. HKIOD are co-ordinating with the other departments concerned.
3. On Cyprus the sub-committee have already been given the unclassified memorandum prepared for the Select Committee on Cyprus, which covers all the general political background; but they have asked for some oral briefing as well. They are to visit UNFICYP Headquarters at Nicosia; it may be as well, therefore, to be prepared to answer questions on, e.g. UK's contribution to UNFICYP.
4.
In Greece the Committee are to have general political brief- ing by the Ambassador in Athens, defence briefing (Greece's contribution to NATO) by the Defence Attache, economic/commercial briefing by the Commercial Counsellor and of course - staffing and accommodation matters by the Head of Chancery. They have not asked for written or oral background political briefing in London, but it may, nevertheless, be as well to be prepared to give them some information in case questions are asked.
5. I should be grateful if departments would please let me know the names of those attending the briefing meeting.
