PS/Lord Goronwy-Roberts
RECEIVED IN REGISTRY No. 51
30 DEC.775
GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG:
1.
PROPOSED BBC RADIO INTERVIEW
BBC Radio have invited the Governor of Hong Kong to do an interview for "The World Tonight" programme to be broadcast on Radio Four on Thursday, 8 January. The Governor will be in London
that day, when he will be seeing the PUS and Mr Cortazzi, and he would record the interview in the late afternoon. It is expected
to cover Hong Kong generally and not to concentrate on any one particular topic, such as the new Defence Costs Agreement.
2.
Mr Kidd at the Hong Kong Government office, who telephoned this morning with this informa tion, siad that the Governor would like to give the proposed interview to the BBC but wished to be reassured that Lord Goronwy-Roberts would see no objection. I myself can se·
none. A BBC interview would be another means by which the Governor
might be able to educate informed opinion in this country about life in Hong Kong and it could serve to remove misunderstanding; and
allay criticism about what goes on there.
3. I recommend that no djection should be raised to the Governor's giving the proposed interview.
