the private sector, we have purchased by agreement 71 dwellings from the portfolio
of S. Eversley and Company. The properties consist of four blocks of flats at
Arrowhead Parade, Harrow View (Harrow West), the Coppice, Great North Road
(Barnet, Chipping Barnet), Dinsdale Court, Great North Road (Barnet, Chipping
Barnet) and Ravenor Court, Ruislop Road (Ealing North). All four blocks were
built during the 1930s and are within easy reach of shopping and transport

"A general need exists for improvement to London's older housing
and subsequently retain it for letting at fair rents. By co-operating with housing
associations it is possible to use their skills to ensure a greater impact parti-
cularly in dealing with isolated properties that become vacant. Associations are
now willing to deal with part or fully tenanted property which is often most in
need of improvement. Some of the major associations have bought estates of
tenanted property, some being in flatted blocks." (Source: "Budget 1974/75 for
GLC") Assistance may be given to housing associations or societies to purchase
or improve residential premises.

In the GLC, slums clearance is the Council's reponsibility, therefore,
the future Housing Select Committee should either recommend the early implemen-
tation of the slums clearance scheme decided years ago or scrap the scheme and
allow private developers to develop housing in that area.

GLC annually purchase seaside homes for the aged and handicapped.
This idea can be adopted in Hong Kong.
