The Government now house 1.56 million people population. They hope to eliminate squatter settlements and all sub-standard housing and to provide, within the next ten years, self-contained accommodation for every family in Hong Kong. The Government's ten-year housing plan involves additional housing for 1.8 million people.
2.
The Government has recently announced a modest. increase in public housing rents. This has been necessary because the housing authority have a substantial deficit on their recurrent account, and the size of the deficit is such that, if it is not reduced, it might well affect the housing programme. There had been no increase in public housing rents for ten years.
