Dear Lord Goronwy-Roberts,
I am writing to request an interview with you at any time during your visit that is suitable to you.
The topic I should particularly like to discuss
is the role that you feel a Labour government in Britain, many of whose backbench supporters and front bench members have clearly voiced concern over conditions here, may be able to play in helping the people of Hongkong to achieve at least some of their aspirations.
Since it is not always understood that the British Government is not necessarily just another subsidiary of the larger British business houses here, I feel such an interview could go some way towards clearing up many of the misconceptions that have arisen from garbled-and sometimes misleading - reports that appear from time to time of Parliamentary discussions about Hongkong.
If you are able to spare around half-an-hour for such an interview, I would make a copy of the resulting article available to our sister newspaper, Sing Tao, which is the largest-circulating Chinese-language paper in Hongkong. Like ourselves it is "independent" and publication there would, of course, be at the editor's discretion.
I wish you a pleasant stay in Hongkong.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Stewart
