Dear Cotterill,

HONG KONG MASS TRANSIT SCHEME

1.

My letter 6/38 of 3 April registered concern among Japanese firms over mounting costs in connection with the Hong Kong Mass Transit Scheme.

2.

You may be interested in seeing the further enclosed article in the same vein (the Asahi Evening News of 25 May). For what it is worth, Matsumura, adviser to Jardine, Matheson (Japan), told us this week that he thought the Mitsubishi Group would seek. to carry any losses themselves. They would doubtless place great importance in carrying on with the contract, in view of the prestige it would give them. This in turn might lead to good business elsewhere in similar projects.

Yerrs sincends.
