Please see the attached telegram from Tokyo reporting what happened when the GEC team talked to Mitsubishi. Mr Stuart in the FCO tells me there is a further telegram from Mr Aston the sense of which is to strengthen his suspicion that the Japanese may be trying to put themselves in a position where they can use the British firms as a front in some re-negotiation with the Hong Kong Government.
I saw Mr Hugo Kindersley of Lazards on Friday evening. He was aware of the general drift of what had happened in Tokyo.
in Tokyo. I sowed in his ear the thought that the Japanese might be playing a fairly devious game. We shall need to have sorted out our minds by the time we lunch with Mr Codd on 25 March. Mr Stuart has promised a written contribution from the FCO.
