Notes (1) This is based very roughly on the plans for a new dental school at Edinburgh, with an intake of 60. The approximate total usuable area for this is 60,000 sq. ft. for the National Health areas and 40,000 sq. ft. for the University teaching areas. This has been reduced by 12% to remove a small research element and smaller National Health administration and similar requirements: then a general 60% added for the total of common areas (corridors, toilets, staircases etc.) and then costed at $150 per sq. ft.
(2) Little is known at the moment about the requirements for equipment, except that they are likely to be high. The Government element will have to include dental chairs and their associated equipment and services and have therefore been entered at 40% of building cost. University costs should be a little lower and have been entered at 30%.
(3) The staffing requirements are also largely unknown. The Edinburgh project calls for 51 University relatively senior teaching staff and 50 National Health staff: 214 nursing, ancillary and technical staff (apparently all National Health): 5 administrative officers: 40 secretarial and office staff: and 67 stores, maintenance and domestic staff. These requirements seem high by Hong Kong standards. Figures have been entered therefore for 10 Government staff requiring quarters averaging $330,000 each including furniture: and for 20 University ataff requiring quarters at the same average price.
