48. In May, 1974, the Triad Society Bureau commenced enquiries into a case of assault in Stanley Prison. During their investigation they uncovered various groups of people inside Stanley Prison supported by other groups of prison officers who were supplying and distributing drugs within the prison. It is estimated that these groups have been supplying about 10-12 kilogrammes of No. 3 heroin per month within the prison, payment being made by cash demand notes signed by the prisoners and paid by their relatives outside. The turnover was estimated at HK$250,000.00 per month. present 20 persons, including 10 serving prison officers have been arrested and charged with various counts related to Conspiracy to Traffic in Dangerous Drugs and to smuggle items in and out of Stanley Prison. Among the exhibits seized were a number of hollowed out prison officer's batons which had been used to transport the heroin into the prison.
