39. On 19th June, 1974, a party of police officers acting on information raided a residential flat in Canton Road, Kowloon. The premises was searched but no drugs were found. A man, CHEUNG Lam (1728/2651), 64 years and his wife, CHAN Loi-tai (7115/0771/1220), 62 years, who were in the prem- ises, led the officers to a wooden hut on the roof of the same building. This was searched and a very large quantity of heroin and morphine was seized. CHEUNG and CHAN were arrested. The total seizure of drugs for the hut was 30.561 kilogrammes of a mixture containing 10.396 kilogrammes of salts of esters of morphine and 6.249 kilogrammes of a mixture containing 1.655 kilogrammes of a salt of morphine. CHEUNG and CHAN were charged with Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking. The case is still pending.

A very interesting feature of this raid was that the morphine seized had a very strong acetic smell, as though it had been newly manufactured. It would appear that for some reason the morphine had not been acetylated into diacetylmorphine. The morphine was only 26.5% pure. Morphine seized in Hong Kong is normally between 80% and 90% pure.
