was designated as an addiction treatment centre. On 1st January, 1972 a second treatment centre named Ma Po Ping Addiction Treatment Centre was officially gazetted. Since the ordinance became law in January, 1969, 5356 persons have been admitted to the two centres, Treatment remains the same. Besides functioning itself on the treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts, Tai Lam Addiction Treatment Centre, has since the 1st May, 1972, operated as the reception centre for Drug Addiction Treatment Centre Remands. When a person is found guilty of a relevant offence and before a detention order is made on him, the court can remand him in custody for such period, not exceeding three weeks, as it thinks necessary to enable a report to be made on the suitability of such person for cure and rehabilitation and on the availability of places at Drug Addiction Treatment Centres. In practice the usual length of this remand period is between 10 to 14 days. On receiving such a person, a detailed investigation regarding his character, previous history, medical history, family background and any other relevant information is made and the report made available to the members of a Selection Board to assist in its deliberations. The person then appears before the Selection Board which shall determine on his suitability and forward a report to this effect to the Courts accordingly. There has been a total of 5060 persons received since the in- ception of remunds.
(b) As previously reported a three year follow-up study has commenced on a ten percent sampling of all inmates discharged from the Centres. Data is collected on precoded questionaires and the results will be evaluated by the United Nations, Geneva. First questionaires were processed in July, 1972.
