The Shek Kwu Chau Centre was originally built to accommodate 250 male clients. In 1969 it was expanded to take 500. In order to diversify its services to addicts, admission procedures were simplified at the end of 1972. Clients are now admitted for physical withdrawal from addiction and a short period of rehabilitation in the first instance. Only those with the desire and motivation to complete the full course of treatment have to stay on. Today the Centre is almost full to capacity for the first time. Clients attribute this to the availability of a short course of treatment in addition to the full course, coupled with intensified law enforcement action, the higher price of heroin and unemployment. During 1973 38.7% completed the full course and 45.8% the short course; 15.5% were prematurely discharged.

The Society opened a treatment centre for women on Hong Kong Island in December 1968 with thirty beds. It is run on substantially the same lines as Shek Kwu Chau.

The success rate achieved at the Society's two centres is not easy to determine, but the evidence suggests that it is about 25%. Such a rate compares favourably with that which voluntary programmes have achieved elsewhere: very difficult problems confront any organisation whose day to day work depends almost entirely upon the goodwill and co-operation of the volunteers being treated.
