I was glad to see a copy of your letter of 30 July to Bill Squire giving the background on your two meetings with the Foreign Minister.

I am sorry that we have had the 'alarums and excursions" resulting from Amnesty International's telegrams, but with the help of you and your staff we are finding things are settling down to a pretty even keel here.

Your plan to have your Honorary Legal Adviser in attendance as far as possible at the trial (or trials) seems excellent. It would be very helpful to us to have him present and we look forward to having reports of progress in order to deal with press questions and other enquiries here.

Poor old Duc ( the local Consul General)! obvious that he was acting on strong directives from Saigon when he came to see me in the early days in June and he was fussed about them. I can't help feeling that if he had not succeeded in getting the Hong Kong Government to cooperate in returning the 118, his Foreign Minister and others in Saigon would probably have been just as critical.

He seemed in fine fettle the other day, when he went out of his way to say how balanced and appropriate was the editorial in the "South China Morning Post", following Bac's statement. We have already sent a copy of the editorial to Saigon and London.
